Shipping policy

1. Shipping Arrangements
J. Nelson may arrange shipping through one of its preferred carriers. If so, all related shipping and freight charges, as well as J. Nelson’s handling fees, will be included on the final invoice. If the Buyer (or Buyer’s client) chooses to arrange their own shipping, J. Nelson must be notified of the details regarding the movement of the merchandise.

2. Transfer of Ownership & Risk
Ownership of the merchandise transfers to the Buyer (or Buyer’s client) once the freight carrier takes possession of the order. Responsibility for any in-transit damage lies with the Buyer. Claims for freight damage must be filed directly with the carrier within 48 hours of receipt.

3. Buyer-Selected Freight Carriers
If the Buyer selects their own carrier, all claims for damage must be made directly to that carrier. J. Nelson is not responsible for any freight damage or claims, regardless of who arranged the shipping.

4. Delivery Details
Standard delivery is typically “door-to-door” and includes drop-off only. Delivery personnel are not obligated to:

  • Cross the threshold of a building or home

  • Uncrate or remove packaging

  • Install or assemble the merchandise

Additional services (e.g., white glove delivery, installation, rush delivery) can be requested for an additional fee and must be contracted in writing.

5. Refused Shipments & Failed Deliveries
If the Buyer (or Buyer’s client) refuses delivery or fails to accept it, the Buyer is responsible for all resulting costs, including storage fees, reselling costs, and supplier penalties. These circumstances may also invoke the abandonment and forfeiture provisions stated elsewhere in the Terms.

6. Lead Times
Lead times may change without notice. For custom merchandise or large orders, delivery times may be extended. For COM (Customer’s Own Material) or COL (Customer’s Own Leather) orders, lead time begins only after all required materials have been received by the manufacturer or fabricator.

7. Receiving and Inspection
J. Nelson highly recommends using a professional receiving warehouse to:

  • Receive and inspect shipments

  • Consolidate deliveries

  • Assist with in-home installation

Receiving warehouses act as agents for the Buyer and are responsible for documenting any damages and helping to file claims.

If merchandise is delivered directly to a home, a qualified receiver should be present. A signature on the Bill of Lading (BOL) confirms that the merchandise was received in good condition, unless exceptions are noted on the BOL.

8. Damage Claims
If the merchandise is refused due to visible damage, the receiver must immediately contact J. Nelson. If damage is discovered after the delivery, the Buyer should:

  • Note possible concealed damage on the BOL at delivery time

  • File claims with the carrier or manufacturer if the 48-hour window has passed

9. Responsibility & Liability
J. Nelson holds no title to the merchandise after shipment and is not responsible for loss or damage once items have shipped—unless the items are from its own in-stock inventory and shipped directly from the J. Nelson showroom.
